Best-Of Barbeque Ribs, Sausage, Mutton Texas BBQ Not The Same Since The Loss of Legendary Pit Master, Laron Morgan

What times I had on this porch eating the most soulful and honest barbeque ribs, mutton and sausage ever served in Texas. Crosstown has closed. Photo/Barbara Lynne Writing about a close friend that passed away isn't easy. I'm filled with mixed feelings of anger, longing and wonderful memories. Laron Morgan was the best of us. His life lit up the lives of everyone who knew him. A large man with a larger heart. His laugh enveloped you like an enormous hug. RD and I first met Laron in the late '80s when he was the pit master at Biggers BBQ in Elgin (now Meyer's Smokehouse). RD and Laron talked baseball, blues, BBQ and dogs for hours. How they loved their dogs. After Mr. Biggers passed, Laron opened Crosstown BBQ in downtown Elgin. As they say, the rest is history. Crosstown, little known, underrated, overshadowed, but served the best BBQ in the state for years. Laron made the best sausage in Elgin, Texas, the Sausage Capitol of the state. Laron Morgan and the now closed Crosstown BBQ, deserve more than mere mention. While Laron lived, my BBQ ratings looked much different than now. Here is my opinion of his artistry. Best Mutton Ever – You had to taste it to believe it. Meat that actually melted in your mouth. Best Sausage Ever – Hand made, perfectly seasoned 100% beef. Laron made this sausage himself. My all time favorite. Course ground, juicy and flavorful beyond description… imagine sausage made of perfectly marbled prime steak and you get the idea. Best Barbeque Ribs Ever – RD will tell you that his barbeque ribs (pork) had no equal. The best ever. Period. Hands down, no discussion! Laron's brisket, chicken and beef ribs would also be in contention. If you rated all meats from all the joints in Texas, Crosstown BBQ would be the only one that could win a “Best Of” clean sweep across the entire BBQ spectrum. Laron meant a lot to all who knew him. I miss him terribly. It still hurts. He was the best of the best and so was his BBQ. That's why Laron Morgan will be remembered and revered as the #1 Texas BBQ Pit Master of all time.

Crosstown screamed WELCOME! with a seductive smoky aroma that promised untold mouth watering pleasures. This fellow was about to enjoy barbeque ribs. Photo/Barbara Lynne

Laron Morgan's 100% beef sausage. Simple, zesty, juicy and course ground succulence. Honestly the most wonderful sausage I've eaten. Laron will be remembered. Photo/Barbara Lynne
