Photo/kinez Iron Works Barbecue 100 Red River Austin, TX 78701 (512) 478-4855; (800) 669-3602; www.ironworksbbq.com HOUR: Open Monday – Saturday; 11 am to 9 pm. Closed Sunday. The old red tin Iron Works building now houses the Iron Works Barbecue. Another underrated downtown Austin BBQ joint. Serving barbecue since 1978, the Iron Works is known city wide for their colossal sized beef ribs. Unfortunately I'm not a big fan of beef ribs. Unless it's prime rib, and I love pork ribs. The reviews I read about the Iron Works' beef ribs were very good so I asked a couple friends that work down the street at the Convention Center. The report was, point blank, “are you crazy?” They are the biggest in the city. Almost as flavorful as Artz Rib House beef ribs. So there you have it. Great beef ribs.

Just look at those rosy ribs. Makes me want to jump in the car and go get some! Photo/Shannon Clark I have never been in this joint without ordering a slab of pork ribs. Now, from experience, not hearsay… Iron Works pork ribs on a good day can compete with the best of Austin BBQ. I'll tell you what else I like, it is one relaxing place to eat BBQ. The drinks get ice cold in the ice trough. The sides are way above average in quality and selection. Baked potato, chili, French fries, potato salad, slaw and great beans. Beef ribs, brisket, pork ribs, pork loin, ham and chicken are their meat selections. Smoked with oak. The brisket is good and the pork loin is very good. Iron Works barbecue has a heavy smoke flavor. I suspect they are concentrating smoke on various meats and sizes at one time causing some of the meat to oversmoke. But that's part of the Iron Works unique barbecue flavor. It's a good flavor. The Iron Works caters and sells by the pound and has family take out packages that include sides. I'm almost embarrassed to write a review because I've visited often and get the exact same thing every time. Slab of pork ribs, beans, slaw and ice tea. I can only remember tasting the other selections as my companions and I shared and compared. I recommend the Iron Works. Avoid lunch and dinner crowds if possible. Between 2 pm and 4 pm you'll have the place to yourself. Or get there when they open and beat the crowd. If you go, tell me what you order! Go to the Iron Works web site and check their BBQ online selections. The chili is spicy good. Greasy, full bodied, bite you in the seat flavor. Unfortunately, it's only available in the winter. Great Texas red chili.
