BLACKHAWK GOLF CLUB Makes Dramatic Comeback

Great way to start the day. Picture
Once considered one of the worst Texas golf courses, Blackhawk Golf Club has undergone an amazing transformation. Located north of Austin in Pflugerville, Blackhawk boasts a wide open links style course. Only a couple of years ago this challenging course had severe maintenance and staff issues. Not anymore. Someone, somewhere, must have planted a boot square up someones butt because playing Blackhawk Golf Club is a gas. The last time I played here was January 2008. No more fairways pocked with divots. The greens have improved dramatically. Not real fast, but rolling and true. An 18 hole, four tee set ranging from 5,507 to 7,072 yards. Trees and water hazards line the fairways. Greens are large with Tifdwarf Bermuda grass. The course was designed by Charles Howard and US Women's Open Champion, Hollis Stacy. Blackhawk opened in 1990. Since its many recent improvements and upgrades, Blackhawk Golf Club now qualifies as a top value among Austin golf courses. Water comes into play on 12 holes with about 40 sand bunkers protecting virtually every hole. The ninth hole is worth the price of admission. Par 4, 464 yards. Your rank amateur 31 handicap reviewer has never shot better than a double bogey on this hole. Nine is a power hole with major wind interference on a breezy day. Leave your banana at home or as Gary McCord says, “body bags” are behind the greens. If you survive the ninth hole – 18 is a 430 yard dogleg right, cradled between two water hazards. This was once a dairy farm. I like it. Comfortable like an old pair of sneakers. Greens that drive my husband nuts. Even with the slightest of winds your score heads south real quick. Well maintained, challenging and has variety. A very good Austin golf value. Where locals play to avoid the tourist crowds at the newer, more scenic Austin golf courses. Blackhawk offers a good day, a lot of fun at a reasonable rate. AUSTIN TRAVEL TIP: When you're in Pflugerville, eat at Dot's Place.
