Evangeline Cafe is first and foremost a Cajun restaurant, way south at 8106 Brodie Lane, nestled in an unnoticeable strip mall.

Don't let any of that fool you. This place is quickly gaining a reputation for offering fine Austin music of the Cajun, zydeco and instrumental variety.

This is a very small and intimate room. At my last visit there was no stage as the musicians set up in a corner. You sit at a comfortable table, drink ice cold beer and gobble up the best genuine Cajun gumbo in the city.

I come here specifically to hear Mike Vernon and the 3 Balls of Fire. A surf instrumental trio that has a noticeable jazz bent.

Most of the talent here could be considered top line. One of the more avant guard of Austin clubs.

Austin music benefits from Evangeline because it offers great Texas music way off the beaten path.

I've heard complaints about the music being too loud to hold a conversation here. I can see their point because the room is so small. But hey, if you want to talk, simply go outside. They have tables and a nice area set up.
