GREY ROCK GOLF CLUB The Crown Jewel of Austin Public Golf Courses

A round at Grey Rock is like a round in a Disney movie. Bambi trots across the fairway. Thumper munches on the greens. I'm just waiting for the Lion King to jump out of the tall grass and say, “Boo!!” While the ever present road runner looks for a foolish fox for play. The only thing missing is Lady and the Tramp sharing a plate of spaghetti. Grey Rock has won awards from Golf Digest for Best Places to Play -- and deserves it. The facilities are excellent at this Jay Morrish designed course. Driving range and practice areas plus a uniquely Austin clubhouse. That's only the beginning. Grey Rock says they offer something for every skill level. Beginners would do well to spend their time at the great practice facilities. The tree lined fairways, hard doglegs, lakes, tall grass and a marsh are challenging for the serious golfer from any of the tee boxes. I play here and have read other reviews downplaying the level of consistent difficulty this course offers. The 14th is a 591 yard nightmare. Long dogleg right that requires a perfect tee shot to even hope for par. Hole 16 requires another perfect tee shot. The 11th hole is a 513 yard double dogleg that's tough. Yes, the fairways are wide but trees guard the greens as well as the fairways. Bottom line – This course requires a complete game to secure a good score. This is the only course my husband's long shots don't destroy me. My approach and short game advantage eat up the stroke difference. RD put his drive ten feet away from the hole on the 15th green. He then needed five putts to sink it. His short game is pitiful. The 16th and 18th holes have water hazards that long shot artists like my husband can't resist. It's like the old Alka-Seltzer commercial, PLOP-PLOP-FIZZ-FIZZ!! All or nothing, high risk reward holes. Hint -- play 'em smart, not hard. Take the extra approach shot on these holes. This place has all their ducks in order. Beautiful, challenging, great variety and very well maintained. Convenient location. A real combo plate of fun. It's a little pricey but they don't charge extra for the critters. Grey Rock is my #1 Personal Favorite Austin Golf Course period. Some day soon I will beat my mentor and husband on this course. Then I will control the Universe.
