HANCOCK GOLF COURSE
Showing Age, Wear and Lack of Attention

Hancock Golf Course in Austin, Texas

There's history here.

Hancock Golf Course was built in 1899. Considered the oldest course in the state. It used to be 18 holes but has been reduced to 9. The course has history. Harvey Penick was there when it was home to the original Austin Country Club.

No major challenges, little variety, not much scenery. Course has not been well maintained for years. Rolling terrain with creek running through the par 35, 2,633 yard course.

Waller Creek comes into play on five holes. Course is short. Walk. Hole 9 offers the most enjoyment as intact original design 110 year old course.

Don't expect anything but an average municipal golf course and you won't be disappointed. Great for beginners. Play all day under $20. Better and more fun than a driving range for the same dough.

If you play Hancock, get into what golf was like a century ago. Look for ghosts. Listen to them whisper on the greens. Do this and maybe you won't notice the furry greens or hear the traffic.

Hancock Golf Course is the best extended lunch break in the city. A pretty little park with Waller Creek running through and nine holes on small fuzzy greens.

Bottom Line: Better than driving range, play all day under $20. With a bit of youthful imagination you can almost pretend you're way back when. Not that I'm prone to day dreaming or anything.

Please note, this course only accepts cash.

AUSTIN TRAVEL TIP: Wherever or whenever you play golf, please use proper course etiquette and a reasonable play through pace. Makes our game more enjoyable for everyone involved. Try not to get behind a party of Yankees on a hot day. Slower than a one legged man walking to his own hangin' without a cane. Real slow!
