HYATT PLACE AUSTIN ARBORETUM Takes Over AmeriSuites Property

Hyatt Place Arboretum gets mixed reviews on many innovations. Hyatt Place Austin Arboretum :: $$$ 3612 Tudor Blvd. Austin, TX 78759 (512) 231-8491; (888) 492-8847; www.austinarboretum.place.hyatt.com No real lobby. No front desk. You check-in using a touch screen kiosk. There's suppose to be a host in the lobby (what they call the Gallery). The Gallery has a 24 hour touchscreen kiosk for ordering fresh prepared food. You pay by swiping your room key or credit card. Free parking and continental breakfast. Continental is code for fruit, rolls, juice and coffee. What we call a pretend breakfast in Texas. The hotel has an outdoor pool. Business service and Internet access in public areas. The rooms can be a bit dark. So much the better for the 42 inch flat panel HDTV in every room. Eleven high definition channels plus premium satellite channels. Wired and wireless high speed Internet access is complimentary. Refrigerator, coffeemaker and wet bar included. The problem? Think of a do it yourself hotel. You check-in, check-out, eat, from a touchscreen. The host (need more) is busy with other folks and you're left to your own resources. Some folks expect this hotel to function as a traditional hotel when it's not traditional at all. I can see why some would complain about service. I also think the hotel is overpriced. That said, I give Hyatt kudos for improving everything about the old AmeriSuites by 1000%. If you can get a competitive rate, are able to grasp new innovations like galleries, hosts and touchscreen dining, the Hyatt Place Austin Arboretum is a genuine Austin travel option. Compared to other Austin hotels in this price range I wish Hyatt Place would simply increase staff and improve service.

The room is contemporary, roomy and easy to be in. Best part is the bed. A 10 on the bed. A 5 (out of 10) on service and cost. The Hyatt Place North is a better experience.
