LIONS MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE

Lions Municipal Golf Course, one of Austin's favorite.

Originally developed in 1924 by the Lions Club, Muny as it is affectionately known, has been host to a litany of golf notables.

Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw are a few that have enjoyed this tree covered course.

Fairways are narrow here due to the tree canopy that lines the fairways.

Hook or slice and you're in the woods. Your punch shot will be tested at Muny.

Muny is a short course at only 6,001 yards. Fees and rates make Muny one of the best golf values in the city.

Frankly, every course is difficult for me. Muny is not one of the more difficult courses but it provides several challenges that are fun.

Hole 4 has a bunker on the left front of the green that can cause ulcers. Hole 6 is short but if your tee shot isn't perfect you're looking at par or worse. Hole 9 is a dogleg, really tough to drive the green here.

Lions Municipal Golf Course is naturally scenic but not jaw-dropping. The variety of the holes could be much better. The overall condition of the course and greens is very good.

Muny is a laid back old course. No bells and whistles. Its fun factor is that Muny offers golfers a glimpse into golf's past.

As Texas golf courses go, Muny will never lead in the rankings. Before Barton Creek, Cimmeron Hills, Falconhead, Teravista, Palmer Lakeside or Ram Rock, there was Muny. Certainly not the best Austin golf course, but a great Austin golf bargain.

AUSTIN TRAVEL TIP: Muny is a very popular Austin golf course. Make reservations in advance. After your round, I recommend you go 3.8 miles southeast to Chuy's Tex Mex restaurant at 1728 Barton Springs Rd. (512) 474-4452. Great food and killer margaritas.

RESERVATIONS: For weekday tee times, reservations are taken seven days in advance. Weekend times are taken starting Tuesday morning at 7 am.

LOCATED: West of MoPac on Enfield Rd.

FEES: Weekdays, $18 for 9 or 18 holes. Weekend, $20 for 9 or 18 holes. Senior - $10 weekdays only, Junior - $7, weekdays only. Evening - $15, Sunset - $12.

GOLF COURSE & FACILITIES: 18 holes. Practice facilities - driving range (irons only) and putting greens.

RESAURANT/BAR: Snack bar.

RENTAL: Carts and clubs.
