The Mansion at Judges' Hill is actually a large home built in 1900. Renovated in 2003. The Mansion at Judges' Hill has been home to a drug rehabilitation center and sorority house.

A 48 room historic hotel. Some suites. Parking is free. No valet service is available. From the antiques to the courtyard. Every effort has been made to restore the mansion to what it was when first built.

Located in the University District, three blocks from UT, the drag and Austins' beloved Hole in the Wall music venue.

In 2006 the Mansion at Judges' Hill won Austin Awards for most romantic hotel, best Austin luxury hotel and best hotel dining.

What convinced me to give the Mansion at Judges' Hill a shot was a top 10 rating by American Historic Inns & Hotels. With this history and promised luxury, I enthusiastically reserved a room.

I was disappointed with the physical location, food, room and service.

The Mansion at Judges' Hill would be a world class bed and breakfast. However, the building and its location prevent it from qualifying as a top tier, worth the money, Austin luxury hotel.

I could hear complete conversations in the next room. Dining was crowded, portions small and served at barely room temperature. I could go on here, but I will summarize by saying one of the great oxymorons of all time is a “historic luxury hotel.”

Most truly historic hotels suffer the same shortcomings and the Mansion at Judges' Hill is no different.

In fairness to this historic Austin landmark I admit, the majority of the patrons we spoke to loved it. I noticed the fans of the Mansion at Judges' Hill were older folks.

One couple in their 70s, who I shared a drink with, said it was the most romantic hotel they had ever stayed in… To each his own!

The grounds are beautifully landscaped and inviting.

AUSTIN TRAVEL TIP: The Mansion is close to a couple of very popular Austin landmark eateries -- Dirty Martin's and Ruby's BBQ. I recommend both.

LOCATION: North side of downtown, three blocks west of UT and seven blocks northwest of the State Capitol.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Turn left onto Hwy 71 West. Follow Hwy 71 for five and a half miles to the I-35 North exit. Merge onto IH-35 and follow for four miles. Take the Martin Luther King (MLK) Blvd. exit (Exit 235A). Turn left at the second stoplight & follow MLK for 0.8 mile. The Mansion will be on the right at the corner of MLK & Rio Grande. Go through the light at Rio Grande and take an immediate right into the driveway.

DINING: Judges' Hill Restaurant features a seasonal menu and expanding wine list. Open for breakfast from 6:30-10:00 am, Monday-Friday and 7:00-10:00 am, Saturday-Sunday. Dinner is from 5:30-10:00 pm. Sunday Brunch is from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
