Austin Opera House

The Austin Opera House was home of the early SXSW Austin Music Awards Show and a great SXSW showcase venue. Plenty of Austin music scene history. I don't know what the history of the building is. But I was just sure the place would collapse around my ears every time I walked in. This was one of the most rustic or dilapidated of all Austin clubs. Beer and popcorn. A '50s high school auditorium vampire movie could have been filmed here. Charm, personality and a degree of old time grit and grease made it all work. The best SXSW showcases these eyes ever saw were here. Tennessee Dusters, Lucky 7, Del Lords, Marcia Ball, Steve Earle and Los Lobos. Now that's SXSW and Austin, Texas at its best. The Austin music scene lost a great venue, even though the ownership followed up with the great Backyard venue in Bee Caves and the Austin Music Hall. Austin's last great ole downtown dancehalls.
