Soap Creek Saloon Hippie Honky Tonk of the New Austin Music Scene
1972 – 1985

Soap Creek Saloon was a down home, 100% old time roadhouse at the end of a dirt rut road off Bee Caves Road when it was primitive country instead of the trendy strip malls of today. It was the scene of much drunken debauchery and hell-bent-for-leather partying. See the movie Outlaw Blues if you want a glimpse of the original Soap Creek. Alvin Crow, Doug Sahm, Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, Jesse “Guitar” Taylor, Greezy Wheels, Stevie Ray Vaughan played here regularly. There was more action in the parking lot than on most Austin music scene stages downtown. You went to Soap Creek to party and dance your butt off. Classic Texas roadhouse.
