Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Defined the Austin Music Scene
& Texas Music

October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990

Stevie Ray Vaughan started his career in Austin first playing with the Cobra's followed by Triple Threat with Lou Ann Barton and finally Double Trouble with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton.

SRV and Double Trouble single handedly reinvigorated a tired blues scene. Straight up rhythm section, tight as skin on sausage and the most awesome, bodacious, Strat pickin' blues guitar that these ears have yet to hear.

But Stevie Ray was much more to those who closely followed the Austin music scene.

We watched him grow up in front of our eyes. Even though I never spoke to him, I felt I knew him. And that was the key to Stevie Ray. He played with his big heart on his sleeve. You could hear his joy and sadness in the music. In 1986 you could hear his desperation on the Live Alive album.

From the early days at the One Night, Soap Creek Saloon or Antone's -- You knew this young kid had something awfully special.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble left a wonderful legacy we can treasure for years. My favorites are Texas Flood (1983) and In Step (1989). Video and CD must-haves would be SRV and Double Trouble Live at Montreux, Live at El Mocambo (my favorite) and Live From Austin, Texas.

When you visit Austin be sure to visit the memorial at Lady Bird Lake (recently renamed, use to be Town Lake), the sight of many of Stevie Ray's concerts. Then go over to Antone's Club. The Texas music legend lives on in so many ways in Austin. Discover SRV and Double Trouble for yourself. Stevie's everywhere.
